About the work
The Space Between is an interdisciplinary collaboration with visual artist Dan Steeves. The project includes a series of twelve intaglio prints projected behind a live string quartet, and an eight-channel spatialized audio installation featuring fragments of the recorded string quartet moving within the gallery space where the original etchings are hung.
The project also included pre-concert talks by the artists and an exhibition catalogue that with reproductions of the prints, score excerpts, and essays about the music and visual art.
The string quartet was premiered by the New York-based Tesla Quartet in March 2017 and an exhibition of the images and audio installation was first presented at the Owens Art Gallery for three months that year. The exhibition was subsequently mounted at the Saint John Arts Centre with an opening concert featuring the Saint John String Quartet.
